Scale Sieve

A command-line sieve that finds every scale hiding inside a chord, then ranks them by how strange they sound.

Give Scale Sieve a handful of notes and it returns every scale, mode and synthetic scale that contains them, ranked by strangeness. Strangeness is a measure of how far the scale drifts from the diatonic family. We use it to break out of the same three keys.

$ scale-sieve C Eb G Bb
  1. C dorian            ●○○○○
  2. C aeolian           ●○○○○
  3. C phrygian          ●●○○○
  ...
 14. C ultralocrian     ●●●●○

Install

Download the archive, unzip it, and put scale-sieve somewhere on your PATH. There are no dependencies and nothing phones home.
